What is Myofunctional Therapy?

Orofacial "mouth and face" Myofunctional "muscle function" Therapy (OMT) is a specialized therapy that focuses on correcting dysfunctional muscle patterns in the face, mouth, and throat. Improper oral habits such as tongue thrusting, mouth breathing, and incorrect swallowing patterns can lead to a variety of issues including sleep disordered breathing, obstructive sleep apnea, speech difficulties, dental problems, chronic pain and behavioral issues. Through simple exercises and techniques, myofunctional therapy aims to improve oral muscle strength, coordination, and function. Through neuromuscular re-education we are essentially creating new neural pathways from our brains to the tongue and facial muscles to help restore normal function.

How does Myofunctional Therapy work?

OMT involves a series of exercises tailored to the individual’s needs. These exercises strengthen and retrain the muscles of the tongue, lips, cheeks, and throat to work harmoniously.

Therapy includes:

  • Correcting tongue posture – Teaching the tongue to rest on the palate instead of sitting low in the mouth.
  •  Improving swallowing patterns – Eliminating tongue thrust and promoting efficient swallowing.
  • Encouraging nasal breathing – Training patients to keep their lips sealed and breathe through their nose.
  • Enhancing speech and chewing functions – Supporting articulation and muscle coordination.

Goals of Myofunctional Therapy

Forming healthy habits by creating new neural pathways from the brain to the facial muscles.
